YIKES! 56 S. Market

They say a picture's worth a thousand words. Here's three. All taken by Frederick City's eyes and ears, Ned Bond. Bond is a former downtown merchant who's pushed the city way past it's comfort zone on downtown blighted buildings, including the former Asiana on Market.

The above picture is the roof of the beleaguered building before the tarp went on in July. Two structural engineers, including one hired by the City of Frederick, said the building should come down - or be shored up. The Historic Preservation Commission has put the onus on the owner, but some are just waiting for the next shoe - or brick - to fall to see if the city intervenes.

Below are pictures following a weekend of mighty winds. w"There was not enough batten to hold the tarp down," Bond said. "There is quite a bit of loose metal on the roof. We've had little wind all summer and fall. We are now into the nor'easter season where high winds will be more common. Winds from the east will probably be more of a concern."

Alderman Michael O'Connor talks about 56 S. Market, among other city issues, on Extra Talk with Katherine Heerbrandt today. Listen here.

Extra Extras is a new section comprised of items that don't necessarily rise to the level of a story, but make for compelling, uplifting or scandalous reading!
