Data Breach Letters Sent

Letters to 1,000 students affected by the data breach were sent out on Dec. 29, according to FCPS spokesman Michael Doerrer.

“It's likely that letters started being delivered yesterday and will be delivered over the next couple of days,” he said. “If people who expect to receive a letter don't get it in a day or two, they should call us and we can help. If people don't know if they should get a letter (i.e. if they're impacted) they should also call us.”

A sample, generic letter is on the FCPS website. Those sent to students are individualized, Doerrer said, and include access information for the ID/credit monitoring services.

Doerrer said FCPS has received and returned 200 calls about the breach. FCPS does not have the ability to take down a foreign website, where the names and personally identifiable information is listed for sale, he said.

“However, we have been, and are, in contact with agencies like the Maryland Attorney General’s Office that can help get the website taken down,” he said.

David Fitz, public affairs specialist for the FBI Baltimore, told The Frederick Extra last month that the FBI was not investigating the breach, but was assisting the state with resources and advice.
