Extra Extras! Family Feuding

Social media was all atwitter last night over the family feuding happening between Board of Education President and his stepmom, Del. Karen Lewis Young (D-Dist. 3A). Granted, everyone's a bit testy and jumpy these days. Maybe a little Dr. Phil style intervention is in order to restore order in the Young family?

Brad, a Democrat, took to Facebook Wednesday night to lambast the three Democratic state legislators, including Del. Young, her spouse and Brad's dad, Sen. Ron Young (D-Dist. 3), along with Del. Carol Krimm (D-Dist. 3A). He was irate that they bucked protocol and submitted a bill to give the student rep for the BOE the right to vote. The proposal had majority support of the BOE, but was knocked down by the majority of the Frederick County delegation.

Extremely disappointed in Ron Young, Karen Lewis Young , and Carol Mullan Krimm for ignoring local delegation practice and introducing bills to the legislature that were not passed in their own local delegation. Most recently the Student Member Voting Rights Bill was dropped disputed not having local delegation support. While I did not vote for it on the BOE, it was passed by our Board and that is our position, and I honor that. Hopefully these members demonstrate honor and will do the right thing and withdraw the bill!

Already frustrated over the shut-up-and-sit-down treatment by some of her fellow delegation members, Del. Young took her stepson to task for not addressing his grievances in private, and scolded him for his lack of manners. Seems the Dems are getting sick and tired of being shut down on proposed legislation, including the county-supported revisions to the state ethics laws. According to Del. Young, the delegation is led by one guy, protocol be damned.[Any guesses who that might be?]

You are very naive about how our Delegation works. It is not the process it used to be. It is chaotic and controlled behind the scenes by one individual who forces his will on those he can. The process is not fair, transparent, objective or democratic.

The argument devolved from there, with the peanut gallery chiming in on the awkward, and sometimes cringe-worthy exchange. Del. Krimm and Sen. Young steered clear, never tagging in to relieve Del. Young, who she seemed to be doing just fine on her own.

Sad to see this play out in a public setting, but maybe now that it's freezing outside, cooler heads will prevail? On the upside, the Jeane L. Dixon award goes to Russ Hodge of 3 Roads Communications. He submitted his predictions for January 2017 to Frederick Magazine, and although it didn't make it to publication, Russ predicted that the Young family's political animals would appear on Family Feud in 2017. From Hodge, "it didn't take long!"
