Senator Young Targeted by Gov. Hogan

We haven't even gotten into the 2017 City of Frederick election and candidates and would-be candidates for the 2018 gubernatorial election are making lots of noise. You can read more candidate hoopla in Extra Buzz, here, here, here, here, here, and here.

Sen. Ron Young's (D-Dist. 3) feeling like a deer in hunting season lately. Republicans are gunning hard for the vulnerable Democrat in a Republican district. Local Burger King mogul Craig Giangrande's been passing out fliers touting "Giangrande for Senate." Giangrande has been posting the Maryland GOP "stories" about Young becoming "unhinged" on his public Facebook page. The posts complement the GOP's billboards attacking Young's record, and urging voters to email the senator to "stop opposing Governor Hogan." Word is Giangrande's got the full support of Gov. Hogan, and Sen. Michael "King Maker" Hough's (R-Dist.4) been advised to keep his powerful mitts off this one.

Giangrande, Young said, was livid over Young's vote to increase the minimum wage, saying he couldn't afford to pay his fast food workers $15 an hour. We reached out to Giangrande, but he's staying mum so far.

Young said he's been put on blast by Gov. Hogan's office. "I have been told I am his number one target," the two-term senator said. "District 3 has voted Republican for 36 straight years before me, and I don’t win by big margins. In the poll before the last election [2014], eight percent of those polled had heard of my opponent, but 90 percent of Republicans said they were behind him." Young squeaked by newcomer Corey Stottlemyer with 50.8 percent of the vote.

Young's antennae has picked up on other possible Republican challengers, including a former state delegate from Montgomery County now living in Frederick County, and Council Member Billy Shreve.

City Alderman candidate potentials

Add two Republicans to the growing list of possible City of Frederick alderman candidates: Hayden Duke, who ran unsuccessfully in 2013; and Joe Parsley, owner of Frederick Shell Carwash, who made a run at the nine-member Frederick County Republican Central Committee in 2014. He came in 11th.

Already filed to run: Incumbent Kelly Russell (D), Kris Fair (D), and Jeanette Bartelt (D). For more info, visit the city's election site here.

County Council 2018

Danny Farrar, originally slated to run for state delegate has apparently changed his mind and is tossing in for County Council. Farrar is veteran and owner of SoliderFit, a personal training, fitness and bootcamp facility in Frederick and other locations.
