Shaking Off the Dust

A probable third Republican candidate for Frederick County Executive 2018, tired of eating dust on the campaign trail, is picking up the pace.

Councilman Kirby Delauter held a fundraiser in Emmitsburg recently, drawing 300 people. Former Frederick County employee Regina Williams is not far behind, with a campaign kickoff on June 9 at the Liberty Volunteer Fire Company.

The aspirant in question is most definitely not throwing any parties at local fire halls. Instead, word is she’s been personally hitting up the county’s deepest pockets for donations to the cause with a “no holes barred” can-do attitude!

But starting late doesn’t mean she’s campaign cash poor. With money already in another bank, and some help from an adept moneyman, she’s the likely leader in fundraising … so far.

What she has now, though, can’t compete with the head start and spilled ink on her two opponents. This field could get kind of crowded, too. More people vying for a limited number of wallets has got to make a would-be candidate a tiny bit queasy, not matter how “cute” she is.

Exits and Entries?

Two prominent women in local government are rumored to be on the move, one out the door at City Hall, and the other into the 6th District Congressional race.

End of summer is the projected exit for one high profile city employee, according to the buzz. If true, it seems like odd timing. Or is it?

The day Congressman John Delaney designated as “an important day,” is fast approaching. June 26, exactly one year before the 2018 primary race, is the day Delaney will probably announce he’s running for governor.

When that happens, expect candidates to follow up with their own announcements for Delaney’s seat, including, possibly, one of Frederick County’s own.

As the Coat Turns

Accused of being a turncoat by his nemeses and fellow Council Members Delauter and Billy Shreve, Bud Otis is rumored to be making pilgrimages to members of the Frederick County Democratic Central Committee.

Council President Otis is often the tie-breaking vote that generally splits among party lines. And he mostly votes with the D’s.

Who can blame him?

Not only was he called a turncoat and worse since his election in 2014, but was formally accused of sexually harassing Shreve in a bizarre showdown at Winchester Hall. The allegation withered up and died for lack of evidence. If the buzz is correct, does that mean Otis plans another run at county council? Or something else?
