Williams Files for County Executive

Regina Williams, former budget officer for Frederick County government, formally filed to run for Frederick county executive on June 14. Williams and County Council member Kirby Delauter announced their intentions to seek the nomination in the 2018 Republican primary in May, but Williams is the fist to make it official.

Del. Kathy Afzali (R-Dist. 4) is expected to announce a run for county executive after Labor Day. Afzali told supporters in an email that she is not seeking reelection as a state delegate, but will let them know her political plans after Labor Day this year.

"I felt it was important for me to officially file to show my supporters that I am committed," Williams said. "If I am asking people to commit their support and hard earned money to my campaign, then I need to show them that I'm all in. So humbled by the outpouring of support that I have received."

Williams, of Libertytown, has never run for political office, and incorporates that status into her campaign slogan, "Citizen, Not Politician."

"My focus will be on providing services in a more streamlined, efficient and responsive manner to the citizens and businesses of Frederick County," Williams told supporters at her May 11 campaign announcement. [Image, Regina Williams 2018 Facebook page]

She held her first fundraiser on June 9 at the Libertytown Volunteer Fire Dept.

Born and raised on a dairy farm in Frederick County, according to a press release on her website, Williams earned her bachelors degree from Hood College, and is a CPA with a masters degree in Accounting & Financial Management from UMUC. Her mother, Debbie Williams, founder of the Patty Pollatos Fund, Inc, which raises money for needy cancer victims, is her campaign manager. Brett Hess is campaign treasurer.

Williams is the second local candidate to file for the 2018 gubernatorial election. Sharon Keller, also a Republican, filed for reelection as register of wills on Feb. 28. The primary election is June 26, 2018, with early voting starting June 14, 2018. The general election is Nov. 6, and early voting begins Oct. 25, 2018.
