Shreve's Running

Frederick County Council member Billy Shreve (R) has been rumored to run for state senate, District 3 for the past two years. Shreve went on record with The Frederick Extra last week to say he is definitely seeking the seat in 2018. " I want to beat Ron Young," he said. Sen. Young (D-Dist. 3) has said he will be running for a third term in 2018, and that his seat is one of five in the state, currently held by Democrats, that is targeted by Republicans.

Shreve, who served a term as county commissioner [2010 - 2014] and a term as council member under the county's new charter government [2014 - 2018] said in an interview that he believes two terms in one office is long enough. "I believe in term limits," he said. [Photo above, courtesy of Billy Shreve]

Frederick businessman, Craig Giangrande, has formed a campaign committee, but has not yet filed to run for the Republican nomination in the same race. Giangrande is a newcomer to politics, but another Republican candidate, Matt Mossburg of Urbana, served as a state delegate in Montgomery County over 20 years ago. Mossburg has yet to officially file his candidacy.

Of his opposition in the primary, Shreve said his name recognition gives him an advantage.

Earlier Shreve said that as co-chair of Frederick County Republicans for Trump campaign in 2016, will serve him well in 2018 if Trump is still viewed favorably by area Republicans.

Former county commissioner and state delegate Galen Clagett conducted a recent poll to determine his chances in both the state senate District 3 Democratic primary and the Frederick city mayoral's Democratic primary. Clagett said the results would help him decide if he will run at all, and if so, for which office. Clagett has not returned several calls for comment since receiving the poll results.
