White Rabbit Gastropub

By Mary Ellen Brady

Newly opened White Rabbit Gastropub launched July 1 in downtown Frederick and, according to its customers, it has been doing a great job keeping Frederick beer aficionados well-hydrated ever since. Thirty-eight beer taps run the gamut from darker German imports to local, lighter craft brews, along with several more traditional favorites. Yes, they also serve cocktails, wine and soft drinks.

Hometown is important to the two Linganore-reared owners, Ken and Chris. In addition to local brews, they use Frederick grown produce in the kitchen and buy meats from local farmers whenever possible. The location is also special (if not easy to find). Fond memories of family dinners over the years at the former LaPaz location, along with high ceilings and circa 1890 wood floors, in the historic spot were enough to seal the deal.

Want a little something to go with your brew? The pub/restaurant prides itself on small but what it refers to as upscale plates. Steak & fries and four variations (including a vegetarian plate) are the only true entrees on the menu, but big salads, wings and burgers are also available.

Why is it named White Rabbit? We know but we are not telling. Go to the White Rabbit Gastropub and find out.

Dance, Dance, Dance!

Fred Astaire

By Mary Ellen Mitchell

Some people seem to think that good dancers are born, but all the good dancers I have known are taught or trained. -- Fred Astaire

Do you and your partner trip the light fantastic – or are you like the rest of us…more likely to trip and look nothing nearing fantastic on the dance floor?

If you are looking to become more nimble on your feet – you have a new dance studio to check out. The local franchise of the national chain of studios “Fred Astaire Frederick” just had their grand opening celebration. The dance studio opened in June at 5103A Pegasus Court in Frederick – close the Westview shopping center on Route 85. More than 20 couples who have been studying dance had a chance to perform and prove that anyone can pick up moves by taking lessons from a professional instructor.

Owners Melissa and John Jakion and David Kerich joined forces to open the studio over a year ago. “We found Frederick to be a social community and embraced the “Live here, Work Here’ motto of the Frederick Chamber of Commerce”, said Kerich. “We also are involved the Astaire programs annual event in Washington, DC and our national dance championship in Orlando. So there are many opportunities for our students.”

The wonderful thing about taking dance lessons is that no partner is required – so it’s perfectly suited to an individual’s goals to learn, exercise and be social. Dance can enhance your life, and it is fun too.

Five instructors lead multiple dance lesson opportunities throughout the week – fitting many schedules and dance styles. They have you covered from classic ballroom and social dancing to salsa, Latin, country and swing. Private and group lessons are available as well as practice parties where you can take your moves for a spin on the beautiful floating floor. You might even consider Fred Astaire Frederick as a destination for a team building experience.

Every Tuesday night they offer a drop in lesson at Ayse Meze at 6 N. East Street in Frederick. 2 types of dance are taught from 7 to 8:30pm and an open dance goes from 8:30 to 10pm. They have also partnered with the online social activity site Meetup.com and offer a Friday night group lesson for site members.

Brides and grooms, fathers and daughters and mothers and sons frequently book private lessons to help them feel comfortable with their special dance at the reception. Family members and the wedding party can join in too!

For more information call 240-232-2329, visit Fred Astaire Frederick on Facebook or check out their website.
