City Turnout Outpacing Primary

Early voting for the 2017 Frederick city election drew more people in the first four hours than it did in the two days of early voting in the primary election on Aug. 25 and 26, according to Election Director Stuart Harvey.

Voters were lined up at noon to cast their ballots early in the city's general election to elect a mayor and five aldermen. By 4 p.m., 767 people came in to the Frederick Senior Center, at 1440 Taney Ave., many clutching sample ballots in their hands.

The first day of early voting in the primary election, Aug. 25, saw 402 voters, and the two-day total was 733 voters, or 2.3 percent of Frederick's registered voters. Like the early voting turnout, however, Democrats far outnumbered Republicans, 497 to 208. Sixty unaffiliated voters turned out, along with one Libertarian, and one "Other," Harvey said.

Harvey had to call the Frederick Police Department for traffic control, as voters flooded the Senior Center lot and poll workers directed voters to the overflow lot next door at The American Legion building. Others lined the street in front of the Center. The crowds thinned at 3 p.m.
